Mistakes, How Many Times Will We Blame Ourselves

mistake

True justice is paying only once for each mistake

True injustice is paying more than once for each mistake

-Don Miguel Ruiz-

There are many things that separate us from the other living creatures on our planet, but one of the saddest is the fact that when other living creatures make a mistake they never think about it again and can never be punished by there community or their selves again. We on the other hand can make a mistake and either be punished by others over and over, or even worse we punish ourselves over and over again. In the book The Four Agreements it asks us what agreements we have set up with ourselves or what is our personal Book of Law and does it serve us. We created this book and we enforce these laws, so lets say we invoke a new law or agreement, that when we make a mistake we look at it closely and take responsibility and then let it go. This law now protects us from further prosecution, just like our current laws that state we cannot be tried for the same crime twice. How does that feel, does it feel fair and just, to know we have taken responsibility and now can move on.

Now when others try to punish us for things that have taken place in the past, we just state in our defense I have already been punished for this offense so lets move on. Now others might not like that idea and try to punish you anyway, but you now have the power to refuse and let it go, for someone else can only harm you with you granting them permission, in this way we have reclaimed our own personal power. This is something that I am currently practicing not just with my self but with others, so I will let go after I have stated my issue with someone else, and by refusing to go back I release them from further punishment. What a wonderful gift.

Engine Need a Tune-up?

iStock_000008268946XSmall[1]Spring is here and are you like me ready to take the winter tires off the car, book and appointment for a tune-up and oil change?  Just like a car needs a tune-up to remain in running condition your body needs a yearly tune-up to maintain optimum health. When is the last time you had a Doctor’s appointment and had your blood work checked? How is your weight and are you getting enough exercise?

Most people tend to avoid the yearly visit to their doctor and the above important questions can remain unanswered for many years.  I’ve certainly done this myself at one point in my life.  Fear and frustration are the most prevalent factors for not taking that crucial necessary trip to the doctor’s office.  If frustration is the motivating factor and you are not happy with your present doctor then don’t hesitate to try and find another one with a reassuring presence that takes the time to listen to you and invests in your well-being.

Physical exercise and being optimistic can change your mental outlook and will help your health enormously.   Martin Seligman, PHD and one of the leading experts in the field of positive psychology and author of the new book Flourish states: “ when it comes to our health there are essentially four things under our control: the decision not to smoke, a commitment to exercise, the quality of our diet and our level of optimism.  And optimism is at least as beneficial as the others.” Not only will exercise and optimism relieve your mind of stress but it will also give you a boost of energy.  Putting yourself first, adding exercise and a positive mental attitude will definitely enhance your overall well-being.

It’s time to take control of your health in a positive way.  “Your life changes the moment you make a new congruent and committed decision”. Tony Robbins, (Awaken the Giant Within) Taking that initial first step is not easy. First and foremost stop beating yourself up and give yourself a break.  Stay focused on moving ahead with your life with positive energy.  Take on an attitude of action. Try these few techniques before you head out the door to your next visit.

  1. Plan your questions.  Write out a list of concerns and questions to ask before you go to the doctor. You will most likely be interrupted but with the list you can at least go back to ensure that your concerns are being addressed.
  2. Be honest and don’t leave out anything.  The doctor can’t treat you properly if you are not upfront and honest with them.
  3. Insist on being understood.  If you don’t understand, be persistent and interrupt and ask to explain in layman’s terms.  It is important you understand the conversation.

You can change your health if you believe and make good choices to keep your health in check.  Live for today and don’t delay.  Pick up that phone and make the commitment to schedule your next visit to the doctor.

Grab the Wheel of Life

Balance of LifeOver the past week, I found myself listening to many friends share tragic and heart-breaking stories about what is happening in their lives currently.  Some have asked me things like, “Why is God allowing this?”  or “Why is God not responding to my prayers?” I have been mulling over these universal questions that are frequently asked when we face a loss or troubling circumstance.

As I thought about loss and suffering, I was reminded of the wheel of life used in ancient times.  On this wheel, four states of being are depicted, happiness, loss, suffering and hope.  In life, we all seek happiness, but happiness is not a static or permanent state. Life is dynamic and ever-changing. Our state of happiness is altered when any type of loss occurs.  This loss causes us to feel like we are falling head first out of the blissful state of being happy whether it be a small loss or a devastating one.  From here, we enter suffering.  It is in this state that we feel stripped, fragile and unprotected.  This is an uncomfortable state at the opposite end of the wheel from happiness. The interesting thing about suffering is that this is the time when we grow the most, once we accept that suffering is just a part of the equation.  It is vital for our growth and development process. Once we open ourselves to discovery and become aware and accepting, then we move on to the last part of the wheel–hope.  Here, we find ourselves with renewed energy and we begin to see changes in our situation and in ourselves.  Before we know it, we are back around to the state of happiness.

The cycle of this wheel continuously rolls around and around our entire life. Unfortunately, many people spend extended periods of time in the states of loss and suffering.  They suffer so long that it’s like the wheel gets a flat and won’t roll forward to another position.    I don’t know about you, but I recognize that I have operated in perpetuated states of suffering many times in the past.  On some issues, I allowed the suffering to continue to a point where it nearly became my identity in some ways.

So if happiness, loss, suffering and hope are normal cycles of life, how do we avoid getting stuck in suffering and thereby lengthening the time it takes to return to a state of happiness?  The answer is actually fairly simple, we have to grab that life wheel and steer ourselves through loss and suffering with intention and the recognition that this is an acceptable occurrence and part of the process for growth.  I think we get stuck when we resist and hold tight and refuse to open up to acceptance.  Once we “get it,” we are able to move into hope and right back into happiness.

To my friends who are going through tough situations, find peace in knowing that life is dynamic, not static.  Changing cycles are part of the equation that brings growth and transformation.  Keep steering that life wheel with hope in your heart, and happiness will return, guaranteed.

Finding Your Voice

Recently, I was presented with an exciting assignment, write a chapter for a book.  Being a seasoned author for academic health care journals, I did not expect the agonizing process that ensued. In professional literature, personal opinions were taboo. Any personal aside was phrased: “this author agrees or suggests…” I stepped into an entirely new, foreign arena.  I welcomed the challenge. This was another opportunity to say yes, to stretch, and grow.

Although the subject came easily, it was like being pregnant.  This chapter would be born in its time. I thought long and hard before I finally began to write.  I wrote until a paragraph I liked took shape.  Then, I crafted a story around it.  Although there were some decent paragraphs, they sounded hollow and empty. I was lost.  I had no idea how to write this way. I wondered if I could be vulnerable and write from my soul?

I am blessed with a grammarian husband who proofread the evolving chapter.  He corrected the grammar and pointed out the weaknesses and flaws.  I incorporated his corrections and continued to work on the article. Finally it formed some semblance of a story and began to read reasonably well.  I was very brave and asked my learned beautiful, literary genius friend to read it.  I asked her to be brutal.  Her honest, forthright criticism propelled me forward. This was my story and I was missing in action.

I struggled and sat it aside. Finally, a light bulb came on. The real story came from somewhere deep within me.  I wrote and rewrote.  Like all births, this was labor.  But, my authentic, transparent, written voice emerged. The process was painful, exhausting, exhilarating, and life-altering.

I was wondering how many of you have found your voice?  If so, how did you do it?  What was your journey?  How did it change your life?  I would love to hear your story.

Spirituality in the work place

Meditating business partners

How does spirituality and work combine? Well for most of us the majority of our day is spent in our work environment. And that affords us a great opportunity to implement our spiritual practice. We have people to practice patients with whether they are co-workers or customers, we have people who are suffering from depression, anger, sadness, and loneliness, so have compassion, and there is Gossip that should be avoided. One of the easiest ways to start is to look at one’s self and pick and area that you feel you need to improve, Patience, Compassion, or avoiding Gossip. Once you have determined what you want to begin with. Lets say it is patience, maybe there is one person who pushes your buttons all the time, what to do first well they are your buttons and we have given our power away here, so by taking responsibility we can reclaim our power and be steadfast, once we have realized that it is within our grasp to control our responses then we can look at the other persons behavior, and as stated in the amazing book The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz evoke the second agreement Do Not Take Anything Personally, from this perspective we understand what others do and say is a projection of the current state of mind and we become immune to their poison and experience Patient acceptance, but lets not confuse this with a self righteous view of the other person, by understanding they have a mind that is in pain, we can move to the next practice one of Compassion. So as you can see the work place affords us many opportunities to put our study into practice. I hope this writing helps and expands your opportunity for practice. I myself will remain mindful of my daily interactions and look for opportunities to practice.
