A Coach? Me? Now?

CB047201A year and a half ago the only coaches I had heard of were P.E. or sports coaches.  Even though I had been a morning coach listener since the early days, life and health coaches had not even entered my radar.  As an independent nurse practitioner, with a busy practice, I stayed within the confines of western medicine. But, my life came to a grinding halt two years ago when I hurt my shoulder.  Even surgery and rehab had not stopped the relentless pain.  Desperate for help, I researched holistic health.  I took a leap of faith and hired a holistic health coach. The one I chose is well known and quite bold.  Under her guidance, I who already ate incredibly healthy, totally revamped my diet.  I added a host of supplements, a fitness coach, and completely changed my life.

coachWhat did I discover on my journey from chronic pain to the vibrant, healthy, active woman I am today?  The pain was my presenting symptom, but the underlying issues and crippling lifelong patterns were the real cause.  The dreams waiting to be birthed were hidden beneath the gift of the pain.  I was hidden beneath the rubble.  With my combination champion and mentor, I struggled free from years of hiding my light, playing small, and not living my own authentic life.  As I began to nourish and nurture my body, it responded and healed itself from the inside out.  I worked on the issues that presented themselves, finding the answers deep within. I let go of my deep seated need to be perfect.  I grew strong.  I made some of the best friendships of my life.  I went back to school, started a business, and stepped fully into my life..

So, my dear reader, are you at a point of transition?  Are you looking for answers?  Do you long to thrive and live the life you know you were meant to be??  Morning Coach coaches are not consultants.  We help you find your own answers deep within.  We are here to let you shine!  Check us out here…soon!42-16586839

Quantified? Now What?

iStock_000003652840XSmallTo quantify something, comes from the Latin word quantum, the word for amount or measure.  There are numerous ways to measure practically anything now days with all the computer technology out there.  But, when I started thinking about this, it reminded me of an older technology called biofeedback that I have used for years in physical therapy with my patients.  To put it simply, in therapy, we use it to detect and measure how much a muscle is contracting under the surface of the skin.  The patient gets feedback on a monitor, whereby they can see and hear how much muscle activity is occurring.  They use this feedback to learn either, to incorporate more muscle fibers firing, or in the instance of spasm, to relax more of the muscle fibers. I can’t tell you how many patients have told me, “I didn’t realize that muscle was so weak”, until they were able to see and hear the feedback monitor.

Many businesses and individuals spend a lot of time measuring things and collecting data.  They measure workers’ production, income/expenses, and customer satisfaction via surveys, just to name a few.  As individuals, perhaps we measure what we eat in calories, how much weight we lift at the gym and how many repetitions or how we invest our money.  So, while quantifying or measuring is obviously a very important first step, I think that what we do with all this information is just as important.

If you think about the ways we learn, there are visual, auditory and tactile learning styles.  Biofeedback is the perfect combination of these three-you see the graph move on the monitor, you hear a tone go up or down as the muscle contracts and relaxes, and of course, you feel the muscle squeezing or relaxing.  But most of us don’t have biofeedback machines sitting around at home.  So how do we create a lasting change after we have taken the measurements and analyzed the data?  Well, it has to go back to how we learn and incorporating and implementing those things to make a change.

Whatever it is you are looking to change, set up visual cues or reminders. For example, if your goal is to eat better, take a photo of your plate when you consciously choose a healthy meal. Perhaps, set this photo as a screensaver or phone background.  Every time you’re at your computer or use your phone, you will see the great job you did choosing a healthy meal. The more you see it, the more your subconscious will kick in and you will start to choose foods that resemble this more often.  Visual feedback will help direct you forward to your goal of eating more healthy.

Just as sight is a very powerful tool in modifying our actions, what we hear can be equally as important.  I’m sure you have heard the story of the kid who was told he was stupid, over and over again?  Most likely, he believed it and it became a self-fulfilling prophecy. Words and sounds are very powerful.  If you have collected data on starting a new business, let’s say, and feel confident that the numbers and your game plan are solid, but… maybe you listen to the TV news or talk-radio constantly.  Hearing negative messages about the economy, corruption and crime, and about how others are suffering, will only add fear and paralysis to you implementing your business plan.  You need to hear positive messages and affirmations daily to keep your plan moving forward. MorningCoach is a great example of auditory reinforcement to keep you on track to make a change in the direction you desire.

Finally, what about tactile learning?  Take your collected data and get hands-on with it. We have powerful feedback loops inside our bodies that connect the brain to the muscles.  Want to improve your sports performance, maybe in golf?  Get a swing analysis, then break down the components and practice it over and over and over again. Your muscles will adjust and create a new muscle memory and feedback loop with the brain. Before you know it, your swing improves.

These are just a few examples of all the ways you can use feedback learn to change your outcome and results. While measuring is indeed necessary, don’t forget to do something with those measurements.  Don’t get stuck in analysis paralysis.  Use visual, auditory and tactile feedback to take action and thereby improve your data.  This is how you can stay consistent on reaching your goals, whatever they may be.

Do You Self-Track?

iStock_000008326780XSmall[1]This was definitely a hard one to wrap my head around when I first heard the term “quantified self”.  The term was coined by Gary Wolf and he is the co-founder of the Blog – The Quantified Self.  He defines it as “self knowledge through numbers”.  In a nutshell it is self-tracking your daily activities with results of real-time feedback.  I’m sure you have done this at some point in your life or doing it now.  Tracking what you eat to maintain your goal in weight loss, insulin level, heart rate or recording and tracking your workout routine.  I certainly do.

The “quantified self” movement is gathering momentum and one of the quintessential gurus in self-tracking and self-experimentation is Tim Ferris, author of The 4 Hour Body.  He describes himself as “a meticulous data cruncher with access to many of the world’s best athletes and scientists”.   Personally I find his methods over the top but his book is a fascinating read all the same.  Although not new, science and technology have evolved and it is right out of the scripts of Star Trek.

Personally I find there are benefits to self-tracking.  In personal development, self- tracking keeps you accountable.  There are several tools that you can use to keep you on track such as Excel spreadsheets and on-line logs for weight management and workout training.  Another essential tool is the Sacred 6 organization system here on MorningCoach.com.  I use it daily to keep me on target to reach my goals.  JB defines it is: “a prioritized list, either daily to-do list, or a project to-do list. It is an esoteric to-do system, with the top 6 things you need to accomplish during the day, or your top six projects. You work through your list every day, for top focus management.”

The gadgets that are available now to self-track make it easier for us to get the data we are looking for.  Can you imagine a day when we can literally track every detail of our body’s function to help us optimize our health? So in my research on the subject I found a couple of gadgets that are available for you die-hard self-trackers that are getting a lot of buzz in this movement.  I couldn’t believe this device that was featured on Dr. Oz –Fitbit can track your calories burned, steps taken, distance traveled and sleep quality. Unbelievable, it is a motion sensor similar to the one found in the Wii.  Your daily activities are tracked in three dimensions and it converts the data.  How cool is that! You can wear this on your waist, pocket or underwear.  Really I’m not kidding.  When you go to bed you can wear the Fitbit on an included wristband to track your sleep.  Another handy gadget is the Zeo.  It is a sleep device that helps you analyze your sleep and claims to improve it.  It’s a wireless light weight headband that includes a bedside display and online analytical tools with email-based coaching program.  It is a remarkable device to indicate the quality of your sleep and identify how much sleep you are actually getting.

In the end, whatever tools you choose to record your activities make sure you have fun with it! It is the way of the future.  When you keep your passion in the game your persistence will pay off.  You will feel a sense of accomplishment from the results which will motivate you to keep the momentum going to a successful end.   You have to believe and have faith in yourself that whatever you want to happen will happen.  Live in the present moment, chill as it were and do the 1% improvement every day.  With patience and love you will manifest your dreams to prosperity.

Are you a Victim?

I was speaking with a friend of mine this past weekend who was struggling with an issue.  She commented that although she usually is very happy and at peace, she was really struggling and was feeling very sad and depressed.

iStock_000009024892XSmallWhat is happening when we allow ourselves to get down? We allow our saboteur to come into our present and change our perspective into one of a victim.  At that point we feel helpless and blame our situation solely on everyone and everything else.  At this point, we are only viewing our situation from one perspective – the perspective of the victim.  This often starts when our thoughts are focused on lack.  We focus on everything that is NOT going right in our world and let those thoughts snowball.  We play the scenarios over and over in our minds, each time dropping a little lower into our own quicksand of pity.  Each time we think about or tell our story, our perspective becomes a little more one-sided and imbeds a little deeper into our belief system.  After enough of this behavior, we find ourselves unmotivated, negative, depressed, unproductive and no fun to be around.

Can the cycle be broken? Yes!  If you can identify any part of yourself in the above paragraph, you are on your way.  Awareness is the key, and action is the change!  Pay attention to your thoughts.  How do you feel when you think them?  Do you feel light and happy or do you feel a tightness and heaviness?  Would you categorize them as positive or negative?

Once we realize what we are doing, we can take steps (action) to change it and move forward. Think back to a situation where you were, or possibly still are, playing the victim and then find a new perspective in which to see it.  If this is hard for you, pretend you are 5,000 feet in the air looking down on the situation or are your future self ten years down the road.  You can also pretend you are another person altogether.  What positives can you see from this new perspective?    What gifts have you received?  What opportunities have now opened up?  What have you learned that you can now take forward with you in life?  Most importantly, what are your plans to change your situation into one of growth, fulfillment and peace?

If you are struggling with new perspectives and actions steps, enlist the help of a family member, friend or coach. Get out of the pain.  We ARE the creators of our universe, good and bad.  The choice is ours.  What do you choose?

Do You Radiate Positive Energy?

iStock_000004171786XSmall[1]Are you a happy camper, pretty laid back moving with positive energy in the world? Or are you one of those that can’t get your butt out of bed for love or money; caught up in a cycle of negative energy? This negativity can manifest into days, weeks and months when you walk through life unconscious and unaware.  Yes, it’s difficult to conceptualize trying to stay in a positive state of mind when conflict surrounds you.  Let’s change that negative energy or what I always refer to it as  ” stinking thinking”  to put you in the right frame of mind for everyday of your life.

Reframing.  This is a coaching skill that shifts the client’s attention to ponder a new view.  You can use this same technique to reframe your negative thoughts to positive ones. You have a choice to choose to be negative or positive.  Perceive yourself in a more positive light.  Instead of:  I’m done and fed up change it to this too shall pass.

Live with gratitude.  You do make a positive difference in someone’s life.  Believe in yourself.  When you’re not in a good mood STOP and get back to your positive mindset and look with gratitude around you and see what an incredible life you have.

Practice daily positive personal development.   Work 30 minutes every day on positive personal development.  Read inspirational books, watch positive videos and listen to pod casts.  This will change your life.

Surround yourself with people who are like-minded and positive.  I just wrapped up an amazing weekend at JB Glossinger’s Passions 2 Profits conference in Fort Lauderdale, Florida; surrounded by amazing people who are high on life, radiating love and positivity in the world.  Get away from those who are angry and weed out those negative nellies in your life and don’t let the negative people in your life define your happiness.

Stop watching/listening to the news.  Eliminate the news in your life entirely.  Another great tip I learned from JB and what a difference it has made in my life. We live in a culture where negative media is broadcast 24 hours 7 days a week. This keeps you in a constant state of negative energy. I don’t miss the news and if something important is happening I will eventually hear about it.

All of us in this world deserve a magnificent life.  You can wake up at any time and have a redo.  Of course there will be those days.  Feel the emotion then let it go.  Understand that you alone can transform your thought process, so get out there and put a smile on your face and celebrate another day living with a positive mental attitude.  Remember that your thoughts make you who you are. Milton writes: “The mind is its own place and in itself can make a heaven of Hell, a hell of Heaven.”   With the right choices and intention you will definitely get results and shine.
