The Benefits of Embarrassment

From stumbling on stage to walking out of the bathroom with toilet paper on your shoe, we’ve all had an embarrassing experience at some point in our lives. How to overcome embarrassmentWhile some consider these situations to be negative and demeaning, I actually think it’s an opportunity for us to grow in character and in confidence. I know it’s hard to believe how an embarrassing situation can be positive when everyone in the room is pointing and laughing, but it all begins with adjusting your perspective and learning to differentiate between reality and illusions. I was amazed to learn that, for the majority of us, the fear of public speaking is greater than that of dying!  Would we really rather die than speak in front of people? How does that make any sense?

I recently watched an episode of “Inside the Actors’ Studio” where the featured guest interviewer was one of my favorite comedians, Dave Chappelle. During his interview, he described his horrible experience of bombing on stage when his jokes did not receive any laughs. He stated, however, that it was actually the most liberating and empowering experience of his career because he came to realize it wasn’t as bad as he would have thought.  This fueled Dave to become the fearless and great comedian that he is today. He added that embarrassing experiences, if approached with a positive perspective, can help us grow and make great stories to tell our grandkids.

As mentioned earlier, one of our greatest fears is public speaking because of the fear of being criticized by others.  The fear of failing and being criticized is actually the cause of falling on our face.  If we should fail and become embarrassed, so what?  What is the worst thing that can happen, having tomatoes thrown at you?  If so, then look at it as a great opportunity to improve your reflexes.

If you are reading this blog post, then more than likely you have a type-A personality, always wanting to do things right and criticizing yourself for any mistakes. However, I’m here to tell you that it’s actually normal to make mistakes, and if you are too hard on yourself for making the mistake, you will lose the lesson.  It’s your responsibility to learn and grow from the experience.

Do away with these minuscule worries, especially when it comes to embarrassing criticism from others, as most of the time the worries are just magnified by an idea that is actually non-existent. As Dave Chappelle said, messing up on stage is really not that bad, it’s your perspective towards it that really matters.

I leave you with a quote that really embodies this message.  “You grow up the day you have your first real laugh at yourself.” (Ethel Barrymore)

I would like to hear your most embarrassing moment.  How did you deal with it?

Pivot your negative thoughts

Pivot your negative thoughts

Pivot your negative thoughts

Sandy Jean is disturbed by the fearful thoughts that are filling up her mind and she wants to change them.  As she thinks about how to do this she remembers a process from the Law of Attraction Book by Abraham-Hicks called the focus wheel. She signs deeply with appreciation as she knows she can get relief from these thoughts that fill her mind by the process of the focus wheel.  She has used it on clients in the past and many times on her self sometimes as much as five times a day with wonderful success. Sandra Jean knows from experience that the focus wheel is a process to get you into a good feeling place so that everything shifts in her favor.  She has been on the sweet spot on the focus wheel so many times that now not being there in that sweet spot feels awful. Today she is riding in a car on her way to Spokane, Washington, with her husband, Lawrence, to visit their daughter and son in law and their grandchild and she is feeling uneasy about the weather.  In the past this same drive has taken several hours longer of dangerous driving when there was snow and icy conditions.

One year they passed 12 cars that had slid off the road because of ice on the road. Sandy Jean received a text from her daughter, as they got closer to Spokane telling her that the roads were slick and it was starting to snow.  As Sandy Jean glanced at her husband she saw a beautiful peaceful smile on his lips as he sings “I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas with Johnnie Mathis on the radio and she makes a decision.  I am not going to tell him of the text I just got from our daughter about the possible fearful weather conditions that await them.  Instead She reaches into the back seat and opens up her briefcase and pulls her red moleskin journal where she had been keeping her focus wheels. Pen in hand she draws a small circle and enters in the middle of the circle with her pen my now moments are always guided by my highest source, the power that creates worlds. The idea of the process is to hold a vibration of what you desire for 17 sec or more and your reality will be one that you desire and in this case not fear based.  In the middle of the circle she writes, I love knowing the power that creates worlds is unfolding and orchestrating a wonderful drive to Spokane and around the circle she writes:

- I can feel my heart beating in anticipation of this power working for my highest good on small things and big things.

- I am so happy that I have learned how to pivot energy

- I love feeling happy now and about my future with Lawrence.  We are making plans for travel, and fixing up our house.

- I feel so happy with the happy times of this Christmas and it feels like past Christmases are all melding into happy feelings May all people be happy May all Christmases be happy.

- I am excited to learn how to work with the power that creates worlds

- I love thinking that this focused thinking of more than 17 sec. has made my vibration come up into positive expectation so good comes to me and those I love which is all of you from the power that creates world

I have great positive feelings now in the car as the radio gaily sings “Let it snow”, Let it snow.  As we enter Spokane it is snowing but it is the kind of snow scene you see in the movies and my heart feels warm and as I see the glow a porch light and my family standing in the door way waiting for us with the love of Christmas in their hearts and I think May all Christmases be happy for all the loved ones in the world.

Laughter is Good Medicine

two female teenage friendsHave you ever noticed that your day can completely change for the better when someone smiles at you? How about the mood boost that comes from a moment of laughter with others? It is difficult to feel negative when you are surrounded by laughter. Laughter has been said to be contagious. Is this a coincidence or are we designed that way?

Scientists have been studying laughter all the way back since the time of Aristotle.  Current research indicates that laughter is an evolutionary tool that bonds social groups together.  Through connection, social groups excel and progress. But what produces that “feel good” feeling that we get with laughter?

The act of laughing, the movement of the muscles that produce laughter, stimulates endorphins in the brain.  These are the chemicals that increase our pain tolerance and help create that “feel good” feeling.  This is physiology 101.  When we have more endorphins, our perception of pain is altered and our perception of life is altered for the better.  Scientists have more to learn about the brain, but they proven that endorphins are powerful in changing our mood and our performance.

So next time you are having a tough day, find a way to laugh. Your brain and your body will thank you.

Build The New Year Of Your Dreams

iStock_000017195998XSmallAs we are quickly approaching the dawn of a new year, many of us will be thinking about our resolutions, some will even write them down, but sadly most won’t stick with them by the end of the first month.  How do we make things different this time?  I am reminded of a passage out of Henry David Thoreau’s Walden which says, ” Life is the visible form of your patterns.” So if we want our lives to shift, improve or somehow expand to a new level, then we have to look at our patterns.

As we look towards building a new year of our dreams, we must not focus on what’s coming at us, but rather, what’s coming from us. Each of us reflect the frequency of what we are tuned into.  If you are tuned into various patterns of say…gossip, criticism, eating processed foods, addictive habits  or self-defeating thoughts, guess what? That’s what you reflecting into the world. On the other hand, what happens when we are tuned into changing those patterns, when we suspend the disbelief and begin to imagine a new way thinking and doing? What happens when we stop focusing on the “how” and simply start with making an agreement with the possibility?  What happens when we clarify our dreams and clarify our purpose?

I can tell you that when you begin to “put on” your dream and think, act and practice being that dream with gratitude, you will create a new pattern.  You will create movement in the universe. You will begin to think from the result, not from the problem. Your life will begin to shift, expand, and change because you are the visible form of these new patterns.

Do you deserve to reach your dreams in the new year? If you are still breathing, then your answer is yes!  Create your new year by:

  • Designing new patterns of thought and action and practice those consistently. Otherwise, you will simply go back to your default patterns.
  • Writing out your visions of health, relationships, money, freedom, etc. Write with gratitude, as if it has already happened.
  • See yourself in these new patterns and visions and see it as easy. Believe in your belief.

By thinking and acting in harmony with your dreams and by living each day with gratitude, you WILL create and build the year of your dreams. Make it happen! Happy New Year!
