Walk the talk

speechMany people today seem to be quite alright with paying lip service to values. Case in point is the words we say to each other. Many people say they will do things to help others, or make promises to someone. But when it comes right down to it, do they really mean they will follow through with what they offered? It would seem we have forgotten an age old saying….”let your actions speak louder than your words”. This simple yet very powerful statement carries a lot of weight. Although I wonder how many of us truly live by it?

Years ago, growing up in western Pa, I had the honor and opportunity to learn from a very wise man. His name was Father Rogers. No, he wasn’t related to Mr. Rodgers on TV. He was a very wise and outspoken man. His typical sermon wasn’t that of today’s with the “God loves you and go out and love your neighbor”. I was more a “hellfire and brimstone” type of sermon. He really laid it on the line. One of his favorite sayings was that people should “walk the talk”. I never forgot that. And I have tried to live by it all my life.

What about you? Are you walking the talk in your life? Or are you just paying lip service?

Obtaining a prosperity mindset

Prosperity Sign

Having a prosperity mindset has been discussed many times and in many places in the Morning Coach Community. Having this mindset is a key to abundance. But how to we cultivate and keep this “higher level” mindset in a world where we are surrounded by lack thinking?

One of the most important keys is having a defined (i.e. written) life purpose and a set of defined (and specific)  goals. These two steps are crucial to moving forward in a positive way and gaining the prosperity you deserve! Yet many people have not even mentally taken them. Why? Is it because they are too hard to accomplish? Are these steps so nebulous in their nature that only a select few can truly understand how to accomplish them?

The answer to both of these questions is a resounding “NO!” They are, in fact, quite simple. The hard part is quieting your mind and your “self” long enough to focus on completing them. That, and quite possibly the fact that, once we write out our purpose and goals, we take responsibility for our own goals. Our society has this idea that we are not responsible for our own lives, nor do we need to be. Yet that is the exact mentality the US was built on! It’s exactly why the US, as a whole, has been so prosperous for over 100 years!

Once you commit your purpose and goals in life to paper (either physically or virtually), it becomes highly apparent who is responsible for attaining them…..you! There is no one you can look at to say it is their job to accomplish them. But it is through taking this responsibility that we gain the freedom to do what we want with our lives and be prosperous!

Don’t be afraid to be responsible for your own life and its’ direction. Step up and be accountable for making your life what you want it to be. For it is only through your own actions and thoughts that you can attain the prosperity that is yours for the taking. You just have to be willing to take the steps necessary to reach it!

The Circles of Life

Many people these days have the idea that they “need” someone else to complete them. I take great exception to this concept. I don’t think you “need” anyone else to “complete” you or make you whole. Allow me to explain

EAch of us is a whole person in and unto ourselves. We don’t need another’s brain to think of someone else’s lung to breathe for us. We are all born with the power of individual thought and have the ability to make decisions for ourselves. And while they may not be the one’s society would have us make, we can still choose to make them. Even those who are born without the ability to walk, speak, hear, or some other physical limitation have the ability to do anything they choose. I hazard to even use the term “limitation” since there are many documented instances of people who had/have “birth defects” who have gone on to be great leaders and inspirations to us all!

One way to look at this is visually. If you think of a circle with ourselves at the center, you will begin to “see” what I mean. Use this graphic to better understand what I’m talking about.

circles

This is not to mean you are the center of the known universe.

You can however, see how each consecutive circle doesn’t “complete” the former one, but adds to it. In this way, others around us don’t complete us, they simply add to our experience of life

Some may ask where God fits into all of this. That’s easy! He is at the very center of you! The Bible tells us we are all made in the Image of Him and therefore, we co-exist with Him. This is an important point to remember also. For if this is how you believe, how could you possible think God would need anyone or any thing for that matter to make HIm complete? He is all and is everywhere. Hi is omnipotent and all powerful. There is nothing he longs for except to see each of us reach our full potential and lead happy and fulfilling lives!

It is with this in mind that I say none of us “needs” anyone else to make us complete. We are complete in and of ourselves for we are one with God! Call it the Universal Energy if you like, or any other term you choose. But it all comes down to the same thing. If we be still and listen to the words between the noise around us (those that are in the silence), we will find that we are not alone. There is someone or something with us at all times….helping us, urging us forward, cheering us on to do well and succeed. If we only listen!

Just as circles have no beginning and no end and are complete unto themselves, so too are we. We have everything we need to succeed within ourselves. All we have to do is tap in to it and listen to that little voice in the background. Some will find it easy to hear, and others will struggle at first. But eventually, we can all hear it if we choose to listen for it. The next step is to believe in what it is saying to us and trust in both ourselves and it. If you do this, you will never feel incomplete or in need of someone else to make you whole.

Game on!

Football VictoryThis Sunday, two of the most storied franchises in the NFL will meet for the Super Bowl. Being a Steeler fan, I’ve been watching much of the circus that leads up to the gam, and through it all, I’ve continued to have the same thought…isn’t it time to play the game already!?!

I mean, all the hype the media makes in the 2 weeks between the conference championships and the Super Bowl is fun and all….seeing all the big name players perform the dance of words with the reporters, the back stories about how certain players got to where they are, and all the rest of it. But after almost 2 weeks of waiting and building the anticipation, enough is enough already! Bring on the game!

I’ve also been thinking about how all of this relates to life too. Think about it. We each have our own “back story” about how we got to where we are, we all have tough questions to answer throughout our lives, and most of all, we all have many chance to play on the big stage of life!

But many people suffer in what Thoreau called a quiet desperation. They sit in the stands and watch and wait for life to come to them. Or they become paralyzed with the fear of failure or think they aren’t “good enough” to succeed. So instead of getting in the game, they don’t even bother to take the chance. And by not taking the chance on winning, ultimately they lose. For the prize of life isn’t in “winning”, it’s in the trying. The struggling. The problem solving. It’s in getting in the game to begin with! That’s the game of life!

Some of you may actually be old enough to remember that game. It was a board game that was popular in the 60’s through the 80’s. the premise was to go through life going to school, getting a job, maybe having a family, etc. all the way to retirement. Oh, and there were consequences too, like going to jail and other things. But my point isn’t to talk about the Milton Bradley game from years gone by. It’s about the REAL game of life.

Life really is a game you know. There are rules, consequences for breaking them, payoffs for our actions, etc. And every move has possibilities. But the trick is you have to play it to even have a chance of winning. You can’t sit on the sidelines and watch others play. You actually have to take a turn and roll the dice and make you move. Because if you choose not to decide, you have still made a choice (thanks for the lyrics Geddy Lee!! Very profound indeed!!). What I mean is the only way to lose is to choose not to play. We’re all given a game piece and entry into the game, and we all start at the same point. So we all have the same chance to end up with what we want. But we have to make a move to even have that chance! We can’t be afraid to fail because failure is not an option if you play. The only way to truly fail is to not get in the game. To sit on the sidelines and watch others play the game and watch it all pass you by, taking it in like a spectator at a football game.

Just like Super Bowl week, the anxiety and hype that is built around the game can make even the most experienced players nervous. But in the end, the Super Bowl is like any other game during the regular season. It’s played on the same field, with the same measurements, the same rules, and the same intent. Those players lucky enough to play in the Super Bowl go through the circus week waiting and waiting and trying to keep their anxiety in check. But finally, the game comes and the best of them rise to the occasion and say “GAME ON!”. They get pumped up for it. They don’t allow the anxiety and stress of the previous week overwhelm them to the point they can’t play. They get in the game and make their move!

We should take the same attitude toward life. Instead of being paralyzed with fear and anxiety or hesitating because we’re afraid to lose, we should channel that energy into action! Take the leap and just do it! Every morning, instead of waking with the dread of what the day may bring or worrying about the possibilities of failure, get up and say “GAME ON!” and hit the ground running! Enjoy the journey. The prize isn’t at the end of the rainbow, or even at the end of the season like in football. The prize is the rainbow! It’s the journey that’s the payoff in life. Enjoy it!

Adversity

miketomlin-200After watching the press conference of the Pittsburgh Steelers this week, I came away feeling like I wanted to suit up and play for Coach Mike Tomlin! If you ever get the chance to hear this man speak, don’t pass it up! He is awesome!

One of the themes of his answers struck me as applying to life as much as to football (for those who know me, I’m a HUGE Steeler fan). He spoke of adversity throughout the year during a football season, and the fact that it’s just as much a part of the game as actually playing the game. How true this is in life too! We all face adversity in out lives at one time of another. It’s unavoidable. But it’s not whether or not you have adversity in your life, it’s more how you handle it and work through (or past) it that counts.

This brings me to another statement he made during the press conference. A reporter asked him to clarify what he meant when he said he has enjoyed the ride this year, especially with the group of men he has on the team. His reply was typical Mike Tomlin. Without missing a beat, he said “They have a can do attitude”. How true!! No matter what happens, no matter what obstacles are thrown in your path, having the attitude that you will get through it and will not only survive, but thrive is the key!

All too often, we live our lives complaining about this or that……how the boss handled a situation, or how badJumping Over a Challenge to Achieve Success the traffic is, or any other number of “complaints”. And while it sure would be nice for everything to run smoothly and go the way we initially planned, almost nothing ever does. As John Lennon said “Life is what happens while you’re busy making other plans.” How profound is THAT!?

Maybe instead of looking at things as problems or obstacles, we should learn to think of them as opportunities to grow and learn. By changing our mindset from negative (problems, obstacles, etc.) to a more positive, or “can do” attitude, we begin to see that life is adversity. It really is the meaning of life. For what would life be if everything was perfect? If there were no need to pay bills, or eat, or interact with others, etc. Why would you ever get out of bed in the morning? I know my bed is quite comfortable and I enjoy putting my head on the pillow after a long day. So why get up if you don’t have any problems to solve? See what I mean? Without problems to solve, or better, opportunities to grow and learn, there really is no reason for life.

Learn to accept and embrace your challenges in life as opportunities to grow and learn. Embrace the change that these opportunities bring! You may not see the reason for them right this minute, but at some point you will. The Universe is always conspiring for our good. Why try to fight what you can not possible beat? Instead of dwelling on the negative, and continually manifesting more of it, think of the positive. Concentrate on the fact that everything happens as it should and, in that, there is a reason why this “obstacle” has been placed in front of you. Don’t fight it……….flow with it.

And above all, celebrate the obstacles in your life as being opportunities to grow and learn from! It will make the inevitable changes we all must go through much easier.
