10 Characteristics of Successful Entrepreneurs

Success smallEntrepreneurs come in all shapes and sizes. Some are wildly successful in their businesses, and others have just become of that entrepreneurial spark shining within them. Being a successful entrepreneur is a process of personal and professional evolution, for which there are no short-cuts or omissions. In my experience as an entrepreneur and in my years of work with other entrepreneurs, I have found that there are certain characteristics of those entrepreneurs who are able to achieve success in their chosen ventures.

  1. Successful entrepreneurs know their life’s purpose. I have seen people who step into business ventures simply for monetary gain or because someone else suggested that it would be a great idea. However, becoming an entrepreneur for the wrong reasons can lead to burnout and resentment. When you are working in unison with your life’s purpose, you experience a sense of joy and excitement for what you do and there is an innate drive to get your message out to the world!
  2. Successful entrepreneurs are self-aware. I have always believed that entrepreneurship is the most direct path to self-awareness. Becoming crystal clear about your own strengths and capabilities empowers you in being able to leverage them in powerful ways.
  3. Successful entrepreneurs examine their own beliefs. Your beliefs are reflected directly in your actions and what you are currently manifesting (or what you have manifested in the past). Successful entrepreneurs remain mindful of this and regularly ask themselves, “Is this belief serving me?”
  4. Successful entrepreneurs listen to their intuition. Everyone has intuition, but some have developed the skill of tapping into it. As an entrepreneur, it is imperative to be able to turn off all of that mental chatter and let intuition be the guide.
  5. Successful entrepreneurs are confident. They don’t ask themselves, “Do I deserve this, or Am I worthy?” Instead, they tell themselves things like, “This is what I want – how am I going to create it?”
  6. Successful entrepreneurs clean out the physical clutter. It is virtually impossible to have clarity, insight, focus, and prosperity if your physical environment is cluttered and disorganized. Successful entrepreneurs create systems in their businesses and in organization.
  7. Successful entrepreneurs don’t take things personally. They recognize that it takes time to connect with their “tribe” and that running a successful business is all about creating relationships. With that said, they are able to recognize that their message will not resonate with everyone and that they will hear many “no’s” before they get to the “yeses”.
  8. Successful entrepreneurs honor their commitments (to others and to themselves). Most people recognize that integrity when dealing with others is of utmost importance, but successful entrepreneurs also recognize the importance of honoring themselves. If they decide that they will complete a project this week, even though they have not told anyone else that they will do so, they follow through with their commitment.
  9. Successful entrepreneurs don’t treat their businesses like a hobby. They are constantly creating and perfecting their craft. They know that the amount of “sweat equity” that they put in to their business will directly influence the return.
  10. Successful entrepreneurs examine what is between them and their money (getting paid). They know that the ability to receive is every bit as important as the ability to give. They understand that money is a form of energy that is exchanged for value given and they have identified and resolved any lack conditioning or limiting beliefs that they might have had around being paid for their services.

Don’t Be Bashful!

Shy smallI recently found a box of old schoolwork of mine that my mother saved over the years. There are drawings, poems, stories, etc. I always find it interesting to read things that I have written at various points of my life because they remind me of where I was then and how far I have come. One thing that I found that I had written in several different places over the years was that I was shy and timid. While I don’t consider timidity to be one of the qualities of my personality anymore, I remember how it felt when I did. My first grade teacher misspelled my first name virtually the whole school year and every time I saw my name written wrong, I felt dis-empowered and disconnected from myself. However, I was so timid that I decided to suffer instead of speaking up. There are numerous examples of this sprinkled throughout my childhood and teenage years, until I finally decided to quit hiding and speak up!

In my work with entrepreneurs, I find that many continue to struggle with timidity, which is masked as procrastination, low productivity/income-generating activities, and a slow trickle of potential clients. In adults, timidity transforms into limiting beliefs which stunt creativity and progress. I have seen this manifest in many ways, such as prospecting new clients but then having difficulty discussing payment and fees, knowing that a certain contact person could be key in your marketing plan but then putting off calling them, questioning your own expertise (i.e. “Who am I to say……?, or “I don’t have the credentials”), or comparing yourself to others and constantly feeling inadequate.

Many entrepreneurs take the term, “self employed”, quite literally, to the extent that they do not step out in courage and ask for what they need. Unfortunately, you cannot be a business all by yourself. Timidity and fear are forms of lack programming and are low-level energies. As you overcome these debilitating conditions, you develop both posture and presence. Here are some ideas on how to get started:

~ Just ask!

Most of us have considered the question, “What is the worst thing that could happen.” I like to turn that around and ask, “What is the best thing that could happen?” Remember that whatever you ask yourself eventually manifests, and you will never fulfill your intentions if you don’t ask. By asking yourself positive questions you build courage and you emit the high level energies of confidence and capability that will naturally motivate others to respond favorably to you.

~ Practice saying what you mean and meaning what you say

Withholding information because of your own irrational fears is not only detrimental to your business, but is a huge disservice to those you are meant to serve. Communicate your message in an important and powerful manner to others but also to yourself. You are your first customer, business associate, and accountability partner. Practice saying what you want to say to yourself in the mirror at home. Then practice it with your close family and friends. Once you get used to hearing yourself communicating your message to yourself and those close to you, you will have an easier time doing so with others.

~ Visualize

Incite your creative spiritual imagination and visualize your desired results. What would your business look like in the light of courage, posture and presence? What programs/products/services would you offer? How many clients would you have? What kind of revenues would you be generating? Visualize each “next step” that you intend to take in your business and then take them!

What Are You Waiting For?

Waiting smallFor anyone who has been around here at Morning Coach for long enough, you have heard JB discuss the Sacred 6 “To Do’s” and the Sacred 6 “Projects”. For entrepreneurs, these are just as they imply, “sacred”.

Over the weekend, I went to an extremely energetic, radical, and powerful women’s conference. I was laughing at one point when I heard one of the presenters address the issue of entrepreneurs and making the most productive use of our time. She was discussing how others who are not entrepreneurs seem to think that we have all the time in the world because we are at home and/or they perceive that we don’t have a “set” work schedule, or that we are not busy working during the day, as we would be if we had a 9 to 5.

Interestingly, however, is that many entrepreneurs end up getting side tracked and are less productive than they could be. Why? Well there are many reasons, but here are some ideas to help you to evaluate whether or not your could be sabotaging your own productivity and success:

- First things first! You have to begin with looking at what the priorities are for your business. Is it to generate more revenue? Attract more clients? Design a new offer? Identify the fundamental need for your business and start there. Do not allow yourself to fall into the trap of being busy and not productive. Refer frequently to your Sacred 6!

- Take responsibility! Part of taking responsibility for your business is to be able to set boundaries and to be able to say, “no”. When you allow mundane tasks and activities that are not moving your business forward to zap your time, you are operating from lack and fear. Are you spending three hours a day checking email so that you can put off what really needs to get done? Are you agreeing to participate in activities that serve others’ needs to the point that your time and focus are compromised? Pay close attention to whether or not you are “investing” your time or just “spending” it.

- Find/accept help! If you sit down to make your plans and find that you don’t know what to do next, it is okay! Nobody goes into business knowing exactly what to do every step of the way. Do not let yourself slip into the lower-level energy of feeling stuck or frustrated. Find someone to mentor you, hire a coach, get a book, or even look for instructional videos on the internet. Once you shift into motion, the universe will present the information and opportunities that you need to gain momentum.

- Respect the process! As an entrepreneur, you have been called to share your gifts with the world. This applies to every step of the way in the development of your business. Don’t get caught up in focusing on the end result (i.e., I will be happy when………..), or the excuses (i.e. I would, but………….). These thoughts come from the lack perspective of “not enough”. You have enough. Otherwise you would not have been called to share your gifts with the world as the powerful entrepreneur that you are!

Remember that hoping and dreaming will not get you all the way to where you want to go. The universe will not always deliver exactly what you want, but it will deliver the inspiration and opportunities along the way for you to achieve your dreams when you act on your intentions.

So, what are you waiting for?

Courage or Cowardice?

Victory smallThere are a million ways to make a million dollars. So if this is the case, why aren’t we all millionaires? If you are an entrepreneur or considering becoming one, read on.

One of the most common stumbling blocks for entrepreneurs is fear. I used to watch the show, Fear Factor on occasion. While standing with the winner at the end of each show, the commentator, Joe Rogan would always say, “Evidently, fear is not a factor for you”. Imagine that feeling of being confronted with and conquering your fears. What could possibly be a more powerful momentous force? Where would your business be if you approached it from a place of courage and confidence?

Fear and doubt are low level energies, however it is possible to harness the power in them to launch yourself. For example, the fear of living a mediocre life and being financially limited can transform into the motivation to build a business. The fear of aging and health complications later in life can lead to the motivation to exercise and follow a healthy diet. If you are fearful and/or doubtful, it simply means that you have a level of consciousness that has shown you the high level of potential that you perceive for yourself, and that what you are currently doing is not taking you where you want to go.

When you set yourself free from your fears and doubts, you become free to create and manifest the things that you truly desire.

Fear can be absolutely paralyzing or it can be motivating. As entrepreneurs we must continually step out into the unknown in order to be successful. If you are currently experiencing fear and doubt, ask yourself the following with regards to your business and personal life:

- What am I being given the opportunity to learn?

- Have I given myself permission to believe in myself/my abilities/my passion?

- Am I waiting for outside sources to tell me what to do or to keep going?

- Are my fears/doubts the remnants of old patterns that are no longer a match for me (lack programming)?

- When I experience fear, what do I typically decide to do?
