Entrepreneurs come in all shapes and sizes. Some are wildly successful in their businesses, and others have just become of that entrepreneurial spark shining within them. Being a successful entrepreneur is a process of personal and professional evolution, for which there are no short-cuts or omissions. In my experience as an entrepreneur and in my years of work with other entrepreneurs, I have found that there are certain characteristics of those entrepreneurs who are able to achieve success in their chosen ventures.
- Successful entrepreneurs know their life’s purpose. I have seen people who step into business ventures simply for monetary gain or because someone else suggested that it would be a great idea. However, becoming an entrepreneur for the wrong reasons can lead to burnout and resentment. When you are working in unison with your life’s purpose, you experience a sense of joy and excitement for what you do and there is an innate drive to get your message out to the world!
- Successful entrepreneurs are self-aware. I have always believed that entrepreneurship is the most direct path to self-awareness. Becoming crystal clear about your own strengths and capabilities empowers you in being able to leverage them in powerful ways.
- Successful entrepreneurs examine their own beliefs. Your beliefs are reflected directly in your actions and what you are currently manifesting (or what you have manifested in the past). Successful entrepreneurs remain mindful of this and regularly ask themselves, “Is this belief serving me?”
- Successful entrepreneurs listen to their intuition. Everyone has intuition, but some have developed the skill of tapping into it. As an entrepreneur, it is imperative to be able to turn off all of that mental chatter and let intuition be the guide.
- Successful entrepreneurs are confident. They don’t ask themselves, “Do I deserve this, or Am I worthy?” Instead, they tell themselves things like, “This is what I want – how am I going to create it?”
- Successful entrepreneurs clean out the physical clutter. It is virtually impossible to have clarity, insight, focus, and prosperity if your physical environment is cluttered and disorganized. Successful entrepreneurs create systems in their businesses and in organization.
- Successful entrepreneurs don’t take things personally. They recognize that it takes time to connect with their “tribe” and that running a successful business is all about creating relationships. With that said, they are able to recognize that their message will not resonate with everyone and that they will hear many “no’s” before they get to the “yeses”.
- Successful entrepreneurs honor their commitments (to others and to themselves). Most people recognize that integrity when dealing with others is of utmost importance, but successful entrepreneurs also recognize the importance of honoring themselves. If they decide that they will complete a project this week, even though they have not told anyone else that they will do so, they follow through with their commitment.
- Successful entrepreneurs don’t treat their businesses like a hobby. They are constantly creating and perfecting their craft. They know that the amount of “sweat equity” that they put in to their business will directly influence the return.
- Successful entrepreneurs examine what is between them and their money (getting paid). They know that the ability to receive is every bit as important as the ability to give. They understand that money is a form of energy that is exchanged for value given and they have identified and resolved any lack conditioning or limiting beliefs that they might have had around being paid for their services.

I recently found a box of old schoolwork of mine that my mother saved over the years. There are drawings, poems, stories, etc. I always find it interesting to read things that I have written at various points of my life because they remind me of where I was then and how far I have come. One thing that I found that I had written in several different places over the years was that I was shy and timid. While I don’t consider timidity to be one of the qualities of my personality anymore, I remember how it felt when I did. My first grade teacher misspelled my first name virtually the whole school year and every time I saw my name written wrong, I felt dis-empowered and disconnected from myself. However, I was so timid that I decided to suffer instead of speaking up. There are numerous examples of this sprinkled throughout my childhood and teenage years, until I finally decided to quit hiding and speak up!
