Build The New Year Of Your Dreams

iStock_000017195998XSmallAs we are quickly approaching the dawn of a new year, many of us will be thinking about our resolutions, some will even write them down, but sadly most won’t stick with them by the end of the first month.  How do we make things different this time?  I am reminded of a passage out of Henry David Thoreau’s Walden which says, ” Life is the visible form of your patterns.” So if we want our lives to shift, improve or somehow expand to a new level, then we have to look at our patterns.

As we look towards building a new year of our dreams, we must not focus on what’s coming at us, but rather, what’s coming from us. Each of us reflect the frequency of what we are tuned into.  If you are tuned into various patterns of say…gossip, criticism, eating processed foods, addictive habits  or self-defeating thoughts, guess what? That’s what you reflecting into the world. On the other hand, what happens when we are tuned into changing those patterns, when we suspend the disbelief and begin to imagine a new way thinking and doing? What happens when we stop focusing on the “how” and simply start with making an agreement with the possibility?  What happens when we clarify our dreams and clarify our purpose?

I can tell you that when you begin to “put on” your dream and think, act and practice being that dream with gratitude, you will create a new pattern.  You will create movement in the universe. You will begin to think from the result, not from the problem. Your life will begin to shift, expand, and change because you are the visible form of these new patterns.

Do you deserve to reach your dreams in the new year? If you are still breathing, then your answer is yes!  Create your new year by:

  • Designing new patterns of thought and action and practice those consistently. Otherwise, you will simply go back to your default patterns.
  • Writing out your visions of health, relationships, money, freedom, etc. Write with gratitude, as if it has already happened.
  • See yourself in these new patterns and visions and see it as easy. Believe in your belief.

By thinking and acting in harmony with your dreams and by living each day with gratitude, you WILL create and build the year of your dreams. Make it happen! Happy New Year!

What a Blessed Year!

winterwreathIt has been quite a blessed year for me!  I’m sitting here reflecting on this year that is close to an end. So many memories and blessings and conversely challenges along the way.  I am living my dreams and enjoying life.  Just to share a few of what transpired for me: retired from my Canadian government job last January to pursue my dream to become a Personal Development Coach and entrepeneur, vacationed in Kauai and knocked off another item from my bucket list and attended the Oprah show in April.  It was during this time  my husband had a heart attack while playing hockey and I thank God for his second chance and so very grateful he survived.  I take pride in how I handled the challenges and the positive attitude I maintained as I kept moving forward with persistence and tenacity.  December is a perfect time of the year to take stock and  review your mission statement, values and goals to ensure that they are congruent with your vision of your life.

First step – What are my Values?

Your personal values are your spirit or core beliefs and these values play a definitive role in your decision making process and in all facets of life.  Examples of values are: love, family, personal growth, integrity, benevolence and creativity.  Here at Morning Coach, JB Glossinger instructs us to list 20 values and prioritize them.  Before making a decision, review your values to confirm this decision is consistent and it supports your mission statement.

Second step – What are my Goals?

A goal is a personal plan or strategy that you are aspiring to achieve within a certain timeframe.  Whether you want to lose 10 pounds in the next six months, start a new business or learn a new language in the next year, make sure that they are attainable and corresponds with your values and mission statement.  I like to review my goals once a month as with all things change happens.  It helps to motivate me, gives me clarity with an open mind to inspire me to keep on moving forward to achieve my goals and be successful.

Finally -What is my Mission Statement?

A personal mission statement has the same principles as a business mission statement; the subtle difference is a personal mission statement is intended to give you clarity to define what is most important in your life.  So I ask you to consider again these two questions: What is your true calling or what do you really want in life?  In Stephen Covey’s book First Things First, the author succinctly defines a mission statement to be: “connecting with your own unique purpose and the profound satisfaction that comes from fulfilling it”.   Once you have your values and goals identified then you can write a clear and simple mission statement.

I am very blessed to be part of this community and wish you all a Merry Christmas and happy loving holiday season.  Thank you for taking the time to read and comment on my blogs. All things are possible for those who believe.  I wish you much success, love and light for the New Year!

Needle Movers

iStock_000013690792XSmallAs we are approaching the new year, many of us are thinking about our goals and what we want to accomplish in business and in our personal lives. I recently heard Christine Comaford-Lynch, author of Rules for Renegades, speak about powerful goal setting and wanted to share some of the points she brought up in how we can move forward in the direction of our dreams. She uses the word “needle movers”- things that move the needle forward in your business or personal life or essentially, goals that change your life fundamentally. Traditional goals are fine, but they can leave you on a roller coaster of either feeling great when you accomplish them or feeling defeated when you don’t.  Needle movers take a different perspective and are much more powerful markers for achieving what we want in life.  Unlike a goal, a needle mover is designed with three target points in mind and ends when one of those three things is accomplished:

  1. You reach your target. You get what you want. Your needle moves forward in the middle to high zone on your gauge.  In business, it might be a particular figure in sales like $10,000 this week, or a number of clients…5 new clients this month.  For personal goals, it might be something like run a 5-k in 30 minutes or spend 30 minutes a day with your teenager talking.
  2. You reach a minimum level or something that you will accept. Your needle moves forward, but in a lower zone on your gauge. Going back to our examples, perhaps your minimum might be $8000 in sales or 3 clients.  Maybe you spend 20 minutes with your teenager as you are eating dinner.
  3. You get a mind-blowing result and reach a level beyond your wildest of dreams. These are stretches…maybe you see $50,000 in sales, 12 new clients, run the 5-k in 19 minutes or end up spending an hour or how about an entire day with your teenager laughing and having a great time.

No matter which of the 3 things happens, your needle moves forward and you accomplish your goals.  It gives you momentum to keep you moving forward living the life you are looking to live.

I challenge you to take some time as we are winding down this year and think about the following:

3 things that would change everything in your business.

3 things that would change everything in your personal life.

It’s time to move the needle! Make sure you have a coach or accountability partner to help you achieve the mind-blowing results you are looking for in the new year. This is going to be your best year yet!

Journey Distractions

mom and baby

Ok, Morning Coach people, you think you have issues meeting your goals?  Check out the saga of the Klamath River whales.  Here is this mother and baby Pacific gray whale gently swimming in the Klamath River, minding their own business, doing their own thing.  After about a month, the baby heads back to the open ocean.  The mother, content on her own journey, continues to leisurely swim around in circles in the river.

whale diversionJPGThen out of no-where come these smart, super-intelligent, caring citizens who decide that the mother should not be in the river, that what she is doing is not right and that she has to go back to the ocean right now.   So in their infinite, all-knowing wisdom, they shoot her with water, bang on pipes, pound on drums, etc. in an effort to change her course and send her back to where they think she should be.whale spraying

The gentle giant calmly ignores them and goes on about her own personal development and goals.  She does not let them divert her focus or attention.  She continues to swim in the river – up the river, under the bridge, and back down the river.  Every day, consistently.  Not once does she lash out at the people that think they know what is best for her. No angry splashing, no overturning their boats, just a gentle steady progress on her route.  In fact, mostly she ignores them.   She doesn’t try to argue with them or dissuade them from their goals of diverting her.  Instead she let’s them do what they are doing and gracefully continues on her own personal journey.

Now I don’t pretend to understand what she is doing in that river anymore than I understand what you are doing in your own personal river.  But this I do know, whatever she is doing or whatever you are doing, it’s because it is the right journey for your own personal growth and development.  It doesn’t really matter if others understand or embrace your personal goals.  What matters is that you – like the whale – understand your journey  and consistently work towards it.

Next time you have friends, family, acquaintances, or even strangers trying to divert you from your journey, think of the whale – stay the course, be consistent, be gentle and courteous, and stay focused on your own personal goal.  Let nothing distract you.

Motivation Required

motivation

Every now and again we all require time to kick back, retreat, regroup, regenerate, and simply be.  These times are healthy and must be scheduled and planned for.  But, what happens when you just cannot seem to get restarted.  What about the complete lack of motivation? You have listened to the coach cast, worked the daily compass, stared at your goals, mission statement, and vision.  You eat right, get plenty of sleep, exercise, and just cannot seem to get to #1 on your sacred six?  We all have those days.  How do you jump start your motivation factor?

sacred six1.  Check your personal values.  What are they?  Have you narrowed them down to your top three?  If so, when was the last time you relooked at them?  Are they still congruent with where you are now?

Vision

2.Revisit your vision. What is your vision for your life?  What were you sent here to do?  There is a huge difference between a vision and a plan.  Our vision is the big picture for our life. Remember life rarely works out exactly as planned, but the plan is the steps or action points to get there.

3.  What are your big whys?  Why do you want to do the things on your sacred six? Really dig in for the answer beneath the answer that really gets your blood pumping.  What makes your heart race?

walk

4.  If you are stuck:  Sometimes simply change of scenery can help you break through.  Get out of the house or office.  Take a walk.  Clear your head. Take some big sensual breaths.

5. One thing.  Decide on one thing you can do that will bring you the biggest dividend with the least amount of expended energy.  Sometimes it might be a phone call you are really dreading to make, balancing the budget, or whatever is nagging at you. Simply break the inertia. Do it.

joy

6.  Reward/ Celebrate.  Have a reward for completing #1.  Whatever it is:  a pedicure, a round of golf, lunch with a friend, surfing.   Reward your moving forward.  JB talks about high five moments.  I was slow to incorporate this into my life.  But after making a particularly painful phone call last week I actually hopped up and yelled “way to go Elgin!  It is about time.”

Grace and peace,

Lori
