Yesterday was my was my first trip to the my new Acupuncturists. I went to Yang’s Acupuncture & Herbal Center, Inc. The two Doctors that have the clinic there are Dr Yang Aiguao. PH.D.,AP. and Dr. An Xiao Ying, PhD., AP. Since this was my first ever trip to get needled, I was a little uneasy.
Once a got to the center both Doctors where amazingly friendly and explained to me some of the traditional ideas of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine). They both have an amazing pedigree of study in China with TCM and I was immediately at ease.
My plan was and is to experiment on how Acupuncture can help my performance and just overall health. My only real issue I had going in was some left foot pain that I sustained a few weeks ago sparring. I kicked someone’s elbow just around my big toe. So, I told the doctor that is why I was there. To see how this stuff “works”.
He took my pulse and had me stick out my tongue. Something done in traditional TCM. He then discussed that I had a very strong heart and the I had some weakness in my kidneys. This would be from the massive amounts of training that I do. He also said stress is an issue with me.
I said, “cool, lets fix it!” We headed into the room. I got nervous as I had to strip down and lay on the table. I am just not a big fan of needles. I know it is mental, but needles and I just don’t work.
I laid down and he started with my head. I knew the needles where coming as I smelt the alcohol. SHHHH. Don’t tell anyone, but I had my eyes closed. It was really not that bad. He put four needles into my head in various locations. One right on the top of my nose. He then worked the rest of the way down my body with a few extra ones in my left foot.
He then said, “relax”. I must have laid there for about twenty minutes. I really felt relaxed by the traditional Chinese music.
He came back and took out the needles. I did not feel any pain at all which was awesome. He then put some herbs on my foot and told me to leave them on for three hours. That was it. I had made it through my first Acupuncture session.
Right after, I felt totally relaxed. So much so, when I got back to my home office, Luis asked me, “what did you do?” Pretty awesome feeling. My foot really did not hurt the rest of the day. Today a little of the pain came back but I did train real hard this morning.
I think it is going to be a good experiment. I am scheduled to go every week for a few months. I think it is going to at least help me get over my needle fear. It was weird to look down and see all those needles sticking out of you. I will keep you posted on how it goes.
Some tips that helped me:
- Learn to relax. Just get into the experience.
- Feel if the Doctor is someone you can relate to. Has your best interests at hand. I was happy to see the amount of study both of the Doctors at this clinic had. Made my decision easier.
- Open your mind to new things. TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) has been around for centuries.
- Have fun!
Looking forward to my meeting next week. I have more experiments in the works. Right now my personal team around me includes a Rolfer (type of intense massage) A Massage Therapist, a Professional Trainer and now an Acupuncturist. Everything to keep in the best shape possible and be proactive with my health instead of reactive.
I will break down each of these in the future so you know how I use them as part of the new health project here at MorningCoach.com

So often I have seen men and women, particularly those climbing the career ladder, slowly start to let work take precedence over their health. Â I’ll be honest here, I was one of those women who fell into this trap previously. Â It starts out innocently as a workout missed here and there. Â Then you find yourself eating fast-food or packaged food because you are short on time or tired from a long work day. Â Weight gain creeps in. Â You start losing valuable hours of sleep because you are working on a project or presentation for work. Little by little, you find yourself relying more on caffeine or energy drinks to give you that boost. Â Sugar and sweets often becomes another source for that “pick me up” effect. Â Over time, it takes more and more caffeine and/or sugar to have the same effect that it did early on.

I just found out this weekend that a friend of mine passed away after a battle with cancer. Â She was a great woman…hard working, financially successful, very generous, intelligent and kind. Â I have been thinking about her and it saddens me to know that the type of cancer she had was one of the types that have been proven preventable by what we eat. Â She was only in her 50’s. Â I keep thinking how could I have made more of a impact in educating her about health/wellness?
