Morning Coach and Bushido

bushido7In my last seven posts I have discussed the virtues of Bushido as they relate in general, and to Morning Coach. This Code was born of the warrior class of Japan and of the wisdom of Buddhism and Confucianism. Today, this code has less to do with war, pride, power, or conquest and more to do with personal evolution, refinement and enlightenment.

In feudal Japan following a strict code was paramount to all else including one’s own life. It was imperative to maintain the honor of oneself and of family above everything else, and was considered noble to die in the defense of such honor.

While today that is certainly not the case in most societies, the attempt to show honor and integrity in our daily lives continues. One big difference today is that we follow the rule of law as opposed to adhering to a way of life that is based on the seven virtues of Bushido. In today’s world a person who follows the Bushido code might be considered rare. But, by following this Code, we show that we choose to live by a set of higher principles that not only make us a better person, but also can garner more respect and bring us better fortune by virtue of the fact that people are attracted to and more likely to help those they respect. However, if we use the Code for some outward reward, we will fail in our endeavors because they are opportunistic. There is only one preset reward for following the Code; that of leading a life in which we are at peace with ourselves, our decisions, and our actions. By leading a life based on the Code, we show others, ourselves, and the Universe that we are worthy to receive all that is meant for us.

I wonder what the world would be like if we all live by such a Code?

Bushido – Loyalty

LOYALTY CHUUGIThe Random House definition of loyalty is an unwavering allegiance or faithfulness to someone or something, be it a cause, custom, government, person, institution, or product.

Simply put, loyalty represents a clear and non-negotiable commitment. It represents a bond that can only be broken by a shift in priority…a simple choice. A person who is loyal shows a sense of devotion or duty to someone or something. We all understand the concept of loyalty to one’s country or even to one’s spouse. But what else can be seen in a person who keeps his/her word or promise? Loyalty can be shown through many of the other virtues I have discussed. For example, honor, honesty and rectitude are all ways to show loyalty. But ultimately, loyalty is shown through the choices we make as well as the actions we choose to take or not to take.

Morning Coach teaches not only life management to help us reach our goals, but also more esoteric guidance and coaching that gives us a way to become better people and realize our full potential. By being loyal to these esoteric truths, better known as the Universal Laws, and by showing benevolence and understanding toward others we can lead better lives.

Tomorrow, I’ll pull the seven virtues we’ve discussed together.

Bushido – Honor

HONOR MEIYOHonor is defined as “honesty, fairness, or integrity in one’s beliefs and actions”. You will notice the word “honesty” is used to define honor, because the two are closely related. But while they do have similarities, honesty is only one part of honor. It also entails fairness and mote importantly, the integrity to one’s own beliefs.

The concept of honor appears to have declined over the years, especially in Western society. We have become more a society of laws than of honor. Honor is no longer a personal motivation to keep one from behaving in ways that would bring shame to one’s self or family or country. We merely attempt to behave within the boundaries of law and do not look at our own personal approach to ethics or morality. Honor involves more than just following the rules of law when someone else is watching. It also entails following these laws when no one is around. But it is mush more than just “following the law”. Living with honor allows us to live more fully and responsibly, taking credit for our actions whether good or bad and the consequences of them. An honorable person is not only honest, but (s(he is also fair and shows adherence to his/her moral and ethical principles regardless of the situation and whether or not (s)he is being watched.

Morning Coach teaches us to live with honor in all we do, think and say. We not only follow the laws, we also show fairness in our thoughts and deeds to everyone we interact with. By living with honor, we show that we value not only those around us, but that we value ourselves.

Next up, I’ll discuss loyalty.

Book Review – Life without Limits by Nick Vujicic

001After listening to Nick’s interview with JB Glossinger on “Profiles in Success” on Morning Coach, I couldn’t wait to purchase this amazing book.   Nick is an internationally renowned motivational speaker travelling the world sharing his wisdom, inspiring the world to overcome adversity with faith, and spreading the word about the power of purpose.  What is truly remarkable is his life journey.  You see, Nick was born without arms or legs and this book illustrates his journey with his disability finding his independence and following God’s path with humility, love, hope and always with laughter.   Let me preface this review with Nick’s motto that he lives by “Another Day, another opportunity”.

The book captivates you right from the start.  Throughout the book in each chapter there are many life lessons such as: Finding a path, Dare to Dream, Holding on to Hope, Attitude is Altitude, the Lessons of Losing and in Chapter eight – Changing the World which resonated with me the most.  This chapter is a depiction of one of his speaking tours, but this time his 2008 trip to India.  His words give such a visual impact of how he must have felt walking through the red-light district known as “Streets of Cages” in Mumbai.  He witnessed firsthand the suffering in the brothels and slums of this city and he also saw the miracles that the dedicated missionaries are performing with the sex slaves and their children on the street of Mumbai.  He states: “As horrendous as life is for these girls and women, they often are afraid to make a change. Without faith, they lose hope, and then they lose their humanity. To make a change, you must be able to envision what lies on the other side. You have to have hope and faith in God and in your ability to find something better.”   This chapter ends with powerful, thought provoking and beautiful stories of women who found their courage despite their adversity to make a change and find their path to “God’s love and the strength of the human spirit”.

To conclude, I humbly ask you to take the time to read this book.  I would like to close with Nick’s words as I could not say it any better: “When you believe in abundance, you believe there are enough of God’s blessings – enough fulfillment, enough opportunity, enough happiness and enough love – out there for everyone. I encourage you to take that point of view because it opens you up to other people. With an abundance mentality, you believe there are rewards enough for everyone, so competition is more about striving to do your best and encouraging others to the same.”  Amen Nick Amen and God bless. Thank you for this gift and continue to be a force to reckon with in the world.

Challenge Winner

Challenge Winner

As reported in the HealthyWeigh challenge news :“Noon held our winners for the day and our greatest weight loss of the day. Team ‘String Bean Jeans’ danced away with the win with a 2.03% of weight loss for the week! Sandra and Sherry were excited as they left the building with banners worn proudly and beautiful throws courtesy of one of our amazing clients.”

Along with my wide bounteous smile as I gratefully accepted the banner, there was something else different about me.  I felt and walked differently.  I had a new lofty,  proud gait described as a sashay from my admiring subconscious.  I had experienced an “ah-ha” Moment realizing I had busted three of my beliefs that were not doing me any good. Do these myths sound familiar in todays world.  If so is it time for all of us to rethink what we believe.

Age Myth Busters

Age Myth Busters

There are many myths around age that I feel could be labeled Myth busted.  As I thought of my own life recalling  at age 62 I was hired as an Art Teacher and the current myth was “You are too old to get a job” and at age 68 busting another myth that you are too old for a new career and here today I have two wonderfully fulfilling careers along with being an Art Teacher I am starting a new career as a  coach with JB Glossinger’s Morning Coach Team  and receiving training under Credentialed Coach Robert Stack.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 Remember the myth often stenciled on tee shirts that loving friends and family give each other “It’s all down hill” from age 50  Turning the corner into the 70’s  finds me again busting that myth with a forward look  to a future with great energy, enthusiasm and expectancy. I feel that we all can be remarkable in our second act of life, if we encompass the banner words DECIDE-COMMIT-SUCCEED as we live our lives.
